Australia has some of the world's most spectacular hiking trails — and the good news is, many of them welcome dogs on leash. Here are five of our favourites to add to your adventure list.
1. Manly to Spit Bridge Coastal Walk — Sydney, NSW
One of Sydney's most iconic walks, this 10km coastal trail winds through bushland and past stunning harbour views. Dogs are welcome on leash for most of the route, and there are plenty of spots to stop for water and a rest. Pack your portable water bottle — the trail can get warm in summer.
2. Werribee Gorge Circuit — Werribee, VIC
A rugged and rewarding 9km loop through dramatic gorge country just outside Melbourne. Dogs are permitted on leash and will love the rocky terrain and creek crossings. Bring a drying towel — there's a good chance they'll get wet.
3. Carnarvon Gorge — Queensland
One of Queensland's most breathtaking natural wonders, Carnarvon Gorge offers a range of walks through ancient sandstone gorges and lush fern gardens. Dogs are welcome on the main gorge track on leash. Start early to beat the heat.
4. Rawnsley Park to Wilpena Pound — Flinders Ranges, SA
The Flinders Ranges offer some of South Australia's most dramatic scenery, and dogs are welcome on many of the trails in the area. The red dirt, wide open skies, and cool mornings make this a magical destination for dog adventurers.
5. Bluff Knoll — Stirling Range, WA
Western Australia's highest peak offers a challenging 6km return hike with incredible views. Dogs are permitted on leash and will love the cooler temperatures at altitude. Be prepared for changeable weather and carry plenty of water for both of you.
